Chasing Shadows with Laughter: Inspector Zende on Netflix

When real-life stories meet cinema, they often carry an extra weight of curiosity. Inspector Zende, starring Manoj Bajpayee, Girija Oak, Bhau Kadam, Sachin Khedekar, Vaibhav Mangle, Omkar Raut, and Jim Sarbh, is a film that successfully blends truth with entertainment. The movie is based on the real-life case of Inspector Madhukar Zende, the man who captured the notorious Charles Sobhraj—renamed Carl Bhojraj in the film.

The narrative unfolds as a comedy-thriller, where tension and light-hearted humour are balanced in equal measure. Instead of being heavy-handed, the storytelling flows smoothly, balancing the thrill of a manhunt with moments of laughter that make the viewing experience enjoyable and family-friendly.

A major highlight is the recreation of the 1990s era—the streets of Mumbai, the beaches of Goa, and the overall visual palette transport the audience back in time. The production design deserves applause for its authenticity and attention to detail, ensuring the backdrop feels alive and believable.

Performance-wise, the cast shines in their own ways. Bhau Kadam stands out with his impeccable comic timing, delivering moments that break the tension yet never feel out of place.

Manoj Bajpayee, as always, brings gravitas and subtle intensity, anchoring the film with his presence. Supporting actors like Girija Oak, Sachin Khedekar, and Vaibhav Mangle add depth, each sketching memorable characters with their own quirks and nuances.

An interesting aspect of the film is its predominantly Marathi cast—about 80%— which grounds the story in its cultural and geographical setting. Since the events unfold across Mumbai and Goa, this casting choice not only adds authenticity but also brings freshness to the film’s texture.

Directed and written by Chinmay Mandlekar and produced by Om Raut and Jay Shewakrama under the banner of Northern Light Films, the movie feels confident in its tone. It doesn’t try to oversell drama; instead, it lets the simplicity of the story and the charm of the characters do the work.

In the end, Inspector Zende is not just about catching a criminal—it’s about reliving a slice of history with a dose of entertainment. It’s witty, engaging, and nostalgic, making it a perfect weekend watch with family.
