Pune, India: In an era where business success is increasingly measured by purpose as much as profit, Estrange Aurora recently hosted an inspiring leadership conversation with Sumita Ghose, Founder of Rangsutra and Board Member of Charkha Development Communication Network.
The interactive session explored the intersections of ethical leadership, artisan empowerment, sustainability, and the enduring significance of India's traditional crafts in a rapidly changing world.
Sumita Ghose, acknowledged as a leading social entrepreneur in India, has dedicated many years to transforming the concept of inclusive growth. Through her initiative, Rangsutra, she has facilitated sustainable livelihood opportunities for over 2,000 artisan families, predominantly women, by bridging traditional craftsmanship with modern markets. Her efforts illustrate that economic advancement and social responsibility can complement each other when grounded in trust, dignity, and a shared goal.

The session featured an engaging panel discussion led by Jyoti More, Shruti Joshi, and Dr. (HC) Prachetan Potadar, whose thoughtful questions guided the conversation beyond entrepreneurship into broader reflections on leadership, cultural preservation, innovation, and human values.
Throughout the discussion, Sumita Ghose challenged the conventional understanding of preserving India's craft traditions. Rather than viewing handicrafts as relics of the past, she emphasised that they must become an integral part of modern living. Every handcrafted product purchased, she noted, contributes not only to preserving centuries-old traditions but also to creating dignified livelihoods, strengthening rural economies, and sustaining communities that have inherited these skills across generations.
One of the most compelling themes of the session centred on empowerment. Sumita described empowerment as a continuous process rather than a single achievement. According to her, it begins when individuals are trusted with responsibility, encouraged to make meaningful choices, and empowered to become owners of their own growth.
Reflecting on the gradual disappearance of traditional crafts, she offered one of the session's most memorable observations:
"Craft is civilization in motion."
She explained that the loss of a craft represents far more than the disappearance of an occupation. It signifies the erosion of cultural memory, ancestral knowledge, community identity, and the stories that bind generations together.
The discussion also explored the relationship between growth and values. While organisations often pursue rapid expansion, Sumita argued that scale should never come at the expense of authenticity or trust.
"Scale matters only when it strengthens impact without compromising trust, authenticity, and human connection."
She observed that organisations may build impressive numbers through growth alone, but lasting institutions are built when growth is anchored in values, integrity, and long-term purpose.
Another significant aspect of the conversation focused on dignity-led leadership. Sumita emphasised that sustainable organisations flourish when every individual—whether an employee, artisan, stakeholder, or collaborator—feels respected, valued, and genuinely invested in the organisation's mission. Leadership, she suggested, is most effective when it creates partnerships rather than hierarchies.
Addressing technology's expanding influence, she acknowledged its transformative potential while stressing that innovation should never overshadow empathy. Technological advancement, she noted, must serve both people and the planet, ensuring that progress remains inclusive, responsible, and environmentally conscious.

Concluding the session with a message of optimism, Sumita reminded the audience that determination and preparedness often matter more than abundant resources.
"When your purpose is clear, and your commitment is genuine, the universe has a way of supporting your journey."
The session reflected Estrange Aurora's ongoing commitment to creating meaningful platforms where distinguished leaders, changemakers, entrepreneurs, and visionaries share ideas that inspire thoughtful action and positive societal change.
